Designing the Funerals cover for the Lexham Ministry Guides series presented the unique challenge of dealing with the most somber subject matter in the series: death. After much ado in my sketchbook, I arrived at this concept of the tombstone and its duality of meaning for the Christian. It is an end, but also a doorway. It is sorrowful, but also peaceful. The steps represent the gate-like nature, transitioning believers to Christ in eternity. The roses represent both mourning and peace, and this is further emphasized in the treatment of the endsheets.
