Designer Comments

The main goal with this cover was to give a subtle nod to Asian culture in a respectful and honoring way. With that in mind, one of my first thoughts was of sumi-e, a type of East Asian ink wash brush painting dating back to 600 AD. I created the graphic element by hand using a sumi-e brush and ink. Along with input from the authors and editorial team, we ensured that the element remained abstract and didn’t look like a specific identifiable character to avoid adding a layer of unintended meaning.
